Golden Eagles fall short in pitchers duel with Rams

JV continue winning streak

The Tyrone Golden Eagles fell at the hands of Penns Valley Thursday afternoon by a score of 2-1. After the offensive explosion on Wednesday Tyrone found themselves in a defensive pitchers duel that ultimately found them on the losing side.

Tyrone turned to Ross Gampe to take the mound and he was as dominant as usual as he breezed through the first five innings of the game only allowing three hits, one run while striking out two batters. The Penns Valley lineup was unable to muster much offensive off of Gampe struggling to get the offense moving just like most of the other teams tasked with facing Gampe.

The Tyrone offense was held quiet for most of the game as their lone run came in the first inning after a leadoff single by Ashton Walk was later followed up by a line drive single into left field off the bat of Ross Gampe brought Walk around to score from second.

Tyrone would hold their 1-0 lead into the fifth inning until back to back singles led to a run when a pitch sneaked past Landon Hamer allowing the tying run to come across the plate.

Both teams had their chances to take the lead late in the game but it was the Rams who pushed the winning run across in the bottom of the 7th inning when they got the run they needed on a base hit up the middle with the bases loaded handing Tyrone their second loss of the season.

With the loss Tyrone falls to 2-2 on the season. They will take the field again looking to push their record back above .500 again when one of their Mountain League rivals the Philipsburg Mounties come to Tyrone.

Penns Valley couldn’t hold back the Golden Eagle Junior Varsity squad from claiming their most recent victory. Tyrone’s bats continued to make contact as they outscored the Hornets 13 to 4. Kendall Lehner, Steven Buck, and Connor McClure all pulled in three hits. Owen Oakes and Eli Woomer each added two. Coach Marvin Murray commented, “Once again good pitching and defense helped win the game with timely hitting and aggressive base running.” Ninth grader Eli Woomer got the win with Connor McClure closing the game.
